Recently I have been thinking about grudges and forgiveness. The evolution of hurt turning into something that needs to be removed entirely and the grief that comes with the loss. It’s easy to want to fill in the empty hole with something, even easier to allow something to rush in and seize the opportunity of occupancy without much of a background check. It’s easier to coast with the false feeling of wholeness, and much harder to see the void as equally deserving of its emptiness. Sometimes there are feelings that come up around the object that once filled the vacancy. The hardest feelings are those of joy in remembrance of the good times. Sometimes I ask myself is there a way to hold on to those good times while still holding accountability and caution around the reason why there is a hole there in the first place? Is it possible to feel the tenderness of the edges, while also feeling the soothing freeness of the center?
It was once thought that black holes only absorbed matter. That black holes are inescapable gravitational vortices, but that isn’t so. Just like us, black holes are made of stardust; we are born from stars. They are invisible. They come in different forms, and we know they are there because scientists can measure how gravity and light are affected by them.
Something remarkable happened in Winter 2021: a light was witnessed being launched out of the center of a black hole. And then something even more odd occurred, light was seen emerging from the backside of a blackhole, connoting that something had entered and then indeed passed through.
Just imagine, thinking all this time, that once something enters a black hole- it is never to be seen again. It is forever gone; lost to the mystery, or perhaps even within it. Thinking that this is the truth of things only to learn that with time and patience things may indeed not be what we believed in the first place.
This makes me get curious about Einstein’s Theory of Relativity… I’m thinking specifically about the theory on gravitational pull or maybe the one about light deflection… or about how things slow down at the center of time… but seriously, what do I know, I’m just an artist, could I really ever understand these theories the way a physicist would?
I do think about gravity, and in weird ways. As a kid I tested it with an umbrella and a super tall ledge. As a dreamer it is tested with jumps off high buildings. As a pragmatic I don’t test it at all; it’s anchor to the ground. But when I think of it as an abstract concept, gravity becomes something kind of sublime; it becomes the glue that holds our universe together.
gravity, also called gravitation, in mechanics, the universal force of attraction acting between all matter. It is by far the weakest known force in nature and thus plays no role in determining the internal properties of everyday matter. On the other hand, through its long reach and universal action, it controls the trajectories of bodies in the solar system and elsewhere in the universe and the structures and evolution of stars, galaxies, and the whole cosmos.
Sometimes people gravitate towards one another; and for all the reasons why, do we really need a reason to insert here? Can we just agree that sometimes certain people are drawn into each other’s orbits. And when they are, things seem to no longer exist as an either or/or either, but rather as a with and/and with. When gravity pulls us in, how then are we to keep maintaining our own gravitational force? What does it take to keep that energy separate when so much of what is believed to happen is a kind of absorption.
What does it take to enter the center of a mystery and emerge on the other side?
I am going to go on a limb and assume that coming out on the other side of an event horizon is not something that just happens. I am also not suggesting that there is some kind of logic to it either. What is at the center of the void? certainly not nothing? There is certainly something, we just don’t know what, (also again, not a scientist so if you are one and you know please comment.)
I want to believe that in the passing through, this something, is where transformation happens; where space and time shape matter into light; and where like substances dissolve like substances; and where time and space eventually liberate alchemized stardust- the building blocks of a new universe.
